Prickly Pear
Prickly Pear, unknown to many, is also called Cactus Fruit. Yes! Cacti actually bear fruit. They aren’t just green vicious creatures basking in the dessert’s sun. Prickly pear is considered a subgroup of the Opuntia species of cactus and referred to as Nopales, mostly found in North and South American warm, dry climates. Although native to America, prickly pears are now grown in other parts of the world especially Morocco, but can also be found in Africa and the Middle East where the climate is more conducive to its nurturing.
In stark contrast to the usual pears we find at any grocery store, prickly pears, as the name suggests, have sharp spikes surrounding their exterior and one must be wary when harvesting or eating them. The fruit is oval in shape and come in a range of colours from yellow to green, and pink to red depending on its ripeness. Besides being a yummy treat, the fruit is also used in food recipes, to make juices and jams, and astonishingly in cosmetics as well.
Its Benefits
According to the USDA National Nutrient Database, prickly pear is extremely rich in vitamins E, K, C, B-complex, magnesium, potassium, calcium, copper, dietary fiber and fatty acids. Additionally, the fruit has high levels of flavonoids, polyphenols, and betalains, all of which have a positive impact on health and skin. The fiber and antioxidants are touted for their anti-inflammatory properties, and show surprisingly positive results not only on the skin, but also in treating chronic ailments like obesity, arthritis, gout and gastric ulcers.
Prickly Pear Seed Oil
Offering multiple possibilities, the stems and fruit of prickly pears are used to extract oil that contains essential fatty acids like Omega-6 or Linoleic acid and the highest levels of tocopherols or Vitamin E. Both these elements aid in reducing inflammation and retaining moisture in the skin, while facilitating collagen production. The process of extracting the oil is labour intensive and acquired manually by applying cold pressure without any chemical treatment.
This oil is interestingly the foundation for cosmetics, added to shampoos and conditioners to prevent hair from looking dry and lackluster. It’s also an essential ingredient in gels and creams for its anti-aging and moisturizing effects on the skin.
Beauty Nut’s Prickly Pear Seed Oil works wonders as a skin cleanser keeping it hydrated and glowing for days. When used consistently, our oil adds radiance and softness making you feel as good as new, brightening dark circles under the eyes and increasing your skin’s elasticity.
